Originally introduced as a cologne in the early 1800's, Florida water aka the fountain of youth was intended to be a fragrance. It quickly became a staple within the community as practitioners viewed it as a spiritual tool to assist, or use within their practices. Florida water is widely know for its ability to cleanse and protect.
But how did a cologne spread beyond its original context for commercial use? This lies within Florida Waters ingredients, and the intention behind it. Particularly in Afro-Caribbean and Latino American cultures Florida water also facilities within various ceremonies, including those associated with Santeria, Hoodoo and Voodoo. It can be used for spiritual cleansing (the aura, alters & living spaces), prosperity, venerating ancestors and those who have transitioned, feeding Gris-Gris, and floor washes (mop with it, it's a game changer when removing heavy vibrations (foot traffic) throughout a home or business.
Its ingredients can vary slightly depending on the recipe or brand (amongst the Peruvian Florida Water) but it typically includes a blend of citrus (lemon or orange), floral extracts (lavender or rose), spices (cinnamon or clove), herbs (mint or bergamot), and a water or alcohol solvents to dilute the essential oils to create its liquid gold.
